Presented a few days ago at the Geneva Watch Days show, Breitling Top Time Classic Cars is an original trio of flamboyant chronographs inspired by three American automotive icons of the 1960s: Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang and Shelby Cobra.
The Corvette is the GT stars and stripes par excellence, Mustang and Shelby Cobra are two unforgettable “Muscle Cars” – a genre that identified cars at the time powered by powerful 8-cylinder V engines.
The three Breitling vintage chronographs are distinguished by brightly colored dials with inserts in orange and yellow or red and blue, and sporty leather straps. The stainless steel caseback is engraved with a detailed logo of the individual car, and the pump chronograph pushers typical of that period are very spot on. The collection includes the Top Time Chevrolet Corvette in red and black, inspired by the unforgettable design of the Corvette C2 that dates back to the mid-60s, also called “Sting Ray” for its curious split rear window, later abandoned due to problems of visibility.
Then we find the green and brown version of the Top Time Ford Mustang, inspired by the model developed in record time in 1964 that gave birth to a new kind of compact and economical sports car. His popularity reached its peak when with Steve McQueen he appeared in the legendary film Bullit, starring with a Mustang Fastback of breathtaking chases.
The next Breitling is the Top Time Shelby Cobra in blue and brown version completes this trio. This watch revolves around the formidable car created by legendary driver and designer Carroll Shelby. Born for racing in the 1960s, this car combined the classic British AC chassis structure with inventive American motor engineering. The watch takes up its distinctive blue racing livery with white racing stripes.
Features
The 42mm cases of the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang versions house a COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 25 (Concepto 2000-RAC-2822 base), an automatic 1/8 second chronograph movement with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. Both watches feature a tachymeter scale and three contrasting black counters. The car logos are reproduced in their dials at 12 o’clock.
The Top Time Shelby Cobra has a 40 mm case, therefore slightly smaller, which houses a COSC-certified Breitling Caliber 41, a 1/4-second automatic chronograph movement with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. It has a white tachymeter scale and two contrasting white counters, as well as the Cobra logo at 6 o’clock.
The absence of the date, for the benefit of a cleaner and more faithful look to the 1960s chronographs will be greatly appreciated by enthusiasts.
