Today I show you the new Speedmaster Chronoscope, the new model that joins OMEGA’s collection of men’s timepieces. The term ‘Chronoscope’ combines two traditional Greek expressions. ‘Chronos’ which means time and ‘scope’ which means to observe. In fact, the instrument measures the duration between two points or two events. And OMEGA’s new 43mm Chronoscope performs this task masterfully and on multiple levels. First of all, the extraordinary dials with the printing of three chronometric scales are noteworthy. Let’s see them in detail.
The speedometer measures speed in relation to distance (the Chronoscope can calculate speed based on the distance traveled. Since the scale measures the average travel time between two specific points, the journey can be expressed either in miles or kilometers.
The rangefinder measures distance in relation to the speed of sound. Thanks to a simple two-step procedure, this fake OMEGA precision instrument can accurately calculate the distance to a visible and audible phenomenon, such as a storm.
Finally, the pulsometer measures the heartbeat. Thanks to the 30 beats per minute scale, it is possible to calculate the heart rate.
Current Chronoscope models pay homage to OMEGA’s past with dials that bear the detailed spiral motif that distinguished wristwatches of the 1940s and the present with a 20th-century inspiration in the leafy hands of each piece in addition to the elegantly traced spiral motif on the dials under the Arabic numerals. Visible through the sapphire crystal on the caseback, it beats the OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer 9908 hand-wound caliber. A further distinguishing feature is the design of the Chronoscope’s bridge: an arabesque “Côtes de Genève” motif that starts from the balance wheel rather than the center of movement, a new feature for OMEGA timepieces. To optimize the watch’s power reserve, OMEGA has included a double barrel with wear-resistant DLC (Diamond-Like-Carbon) coating. OMEGA’s column wheel mechanism ensures precise operation of the multiple functions of the Chronoscope. Both Master Chronometer certified, both the movement and the watch were subjected to extreme conditions, passing the most stringent tests of the watch industry, established by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). The models for sale in polished and brushed stainless steel are 6: 2 with silver dials and blued hands, 2 with blue dials and rhodium-plated hands, 2 with silver dials and black counters (OMEGA’s famous “Panda” dial) with burnished hands. All with Arabic numerals on the dials. The bezel ring is in blue or black anodized aluminum and you can choose between leather straps (blue, brown or black with red rubber interior) with new steel buckles or elegant stainless steel bracelets with micro adjustment in 2 positions (very comfortable).
